Transformers is an American film franchise directed by Michael Bay, produced by Steven Spielberg, and based on the toys created by Hasbro and Takara Tomy. The first film, Transformers, was released in 2007, the second film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, in 2009, and the third film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011. Despite Michael Bay's confirmation on Dark of the Moon being his final installment in the franchise,[1][2] Hasbro's CEO Brian Goldner has expressed his hopes for further films to be made with or without Bay.[3] To date, the series has been distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, and United International Pictures. It is currently the 8th highest-grossing franchise and film series and the 4th highest grossing when averaged to per film.

Transformers is the first film in the franchise. In Transformers, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers that his new car is actually an alien robot from the planet Cybertron. He finds out upon meeting the Transforming warriors of Cybertron—the Autobots led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), that the evil Decepticon leader Megatron (Hugo Weaving) are after the legendary AllSpark which is on Earth along with him. A battle takes place in Mission City between the Autobots and Decepticons. Megatron is defeated by Sam as he releases the AllSpark power into his chest. In the end credits, the Decepticon Starscream (Charlie Adler) is seen flying off into space, suggesting that the battle is not over. The film was released on July 3, 2007.

[edit] Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)Main article: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the second film in the trilogy. Two years after the events in Transformers, Megatron is resurrected by the Constructicons and Sam intends to go to college and have a normal life. Megatron attempts to obtain some symbols implanted by the AllSpark into Sam Witwicky's brain in favor of his master, The Fallen (Tony Todd), to see some glyphs imprinted that will lead the Decepticons to a fragile object that, when inserted in an alien machine hidden in Egypt for centuries, will give them the power to destroy the sun. Sam, his girlfriend Mikaela, and Sam's parents are in danger. Optimus Prime and Bumblebee are Sam's principal protectors. The film was released on June 24, 2009.

[edit] Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)Main article: Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the third film in the series. When the war on Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons appears lost to the Autobots, their leader, Sentinel Prime (Leonard Nimoy), attempts to launch the Ark from their planet, containing technology that could have saved his kind. Attacked by Starscream, it crashes on Earth's moon in 1961. President John F. Kennedy makes his famous promise to the nation to put a man on the moon. The 1969 NASA moon landing is actually an investigation of the wrecked spacecraft. As Sam Witwicky goes into adulthood, the Autobots are busy as they learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft on the Moon called The Ark and of Sentinel Prime. Optimus Prime convinces America's leadership that they must protect Sentinel Prime, and his 5 "pillars", which can help transport matter through time and space. However, they are betrayed by Sentinel Prime as he allies with the Decepticons, killing Ironhide (Jess Harnell) in the process. He aids the Decepticons because they have hundreds of other pillars that could bring back Cybertron. America's leaders send the Autobots to another planet because they feel it is our war. As the Autobots leave, the Decepticons shoot their ship down, believing they killed all Autobots onboard. With the Autobots gone, Sentinel Prime activates the pillars, and Downtown Chicago is captured by the Decepticons. But, the Autobots faked their deaths and battle in Chicago for one last stand. The film was released on June 29, 2011 in 3D and IMAX 3D.
