Vanishing on 7th Street Van

Vanishing on 7th Street is a post-apocalyptic horror-thriller film directed by Brad Anderson[1] and starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo.[2]

Plot

A mysterious, seemingly global blackout causes most of the people on Earth to simply vanish into thin air, leaving only their clothes and possessions behind. Shadows take on lives of their own, being able to speak to and follow their targets. As more and more people disappear, so does sunlight; with days growing significantly shorter, forcing a small handful of survivors to band together in an abandoned, dimly-lit bar on Detroit, Michigan's 7th Street, struggling to combat the apocalyptic threat. Thinking they may in fact be the last people on Earth, the darkness begins to hone in on them alone. As the situation worsens, they know one thing for sure, that only the diminishing light sources can keep them safe. As the lights fail, all the characters start vanishing one by one. During the trailer the word "Croatoan" can be seen, evoking the lost colony of Roanoke.
Luke (Hayden Christensen) is a TV news anchor. He wakes up one morning and realizes that none of his electronics work. After walking down several flights of stairs to the building's lobby, he discovers that everyone has disappeared. He sees many images of the destruction around him, including a pilot-less airliner crashing into the ground. Luke rushes to his TV station, to find his missing girlfriend.
The film flashes forward 3 days, where Luke is now wearing a raincoat covered in lights. After a brief run in with another man on the street, he finds the bar and enters. The boy, James (Jacob Latimore), comes up from the basement with a shotgun. An emergency television broadcast reveals that the darkness is everywhere and people are vanishing in the darkness. They also find out they can only trust the lights that they have, as whatever is in the darkness can create lights as bait to lure them in. At this point, Rosemary (Thandie Newton) comes into the bar screaming about her missing child. Later still, they hear Paul (John Leguizamo) crying in pain from underneath an illuminated bus stop bench. Luke leaves the safety of the bar to save him.
The four gather in the bar, and try to work on the generator which provides them with lights and power. Paul tells them all the story of Roanoke. He later passes out due to an earlier head injury. Luke says he's going to go grab a truck down the road and take them across the border. Luke and Rosemary leave to get to the truck. James then comes out of the bathroom and realizes that the darkness has taken Paul.
Luke and Rosemary find the truck and push it a ways, but with their lights running low, realize they can't continue on. However, just as their lights begin to die, a little girl appears and saves them momentarily with her flashlight only to then run back into the darkness leaving Luke and Rosemary in peril of the darkness. After this, Rosemary takes Luke to a nearby clinic where she starts to find matches, to light the makeshift torch Luke has created. She hears a baby crying, goes to it, and the darkness takes her. Luke finally get the truck rolled back to the bar. He gets it started using the last of the generator's power, and he and James drive away. When Luke stops to close the hood, they are in front of a church. James thinks his mother is inside and goes in. Luke, unable to stop him and feeling he can do nothing, drives away. James is chased by the darkness, which is kept at bay by the flickering candles of the church. Just in time, Luke turns back to get James, crashing the truck into the church. But as he gets out, the truck dies, and the darkness takes him.
James sleeps in the church with the candles, which, one by one, are being blown out by the wind that now comes through the opening created by the crashing truck. The next shot shows him waking up in the church, a single candle still burning, and sunlight coming through the windows. The young girl that Luke chased comes into the church and tell James that he is sleeping in her "bed." James gets up, planning to leave, but the girl implores him to stay. She tells him that her name is Brianna. She has a solar-powered rechargeable flashlight, which still works, of which she says, "It won't go out...as long as there's day." They find a police horse eating apples that spilled from the back of the wrecked truck. As the sun goes down, the shadows of Luke, Rosemary, and Paul are shown on a wall. The last scene is of James and Brianna riding the horse together down a car-strewn interstate. As the sun goes down and the night closes in, Brianna's flashlight is turned on, enveloping them in it's protective light, allowing them to safely proceed onward.
